ROBERT ZANDVLIET
Paintings and Monotypes
April 8th through June, 2000
Peter Blum is pleased to announce the first one-person exhbition by the young Dutch painter Robert Zandvliet in New York. The show will feature his recent paintings as well as the series of large format monotypes entitled The Varick Series which the artist made in New York in October of 1999 together with master printer Maurice Sanchez.
Born in 1970 in Terband, Holland, Robert Zandvliet has been instantly recognized in Europe as one of the more talented and innovative painters of his generation. His paintings focus on the landscape. Zandvliet said in a recent interview that he decided to use landscape imagery partially because it was open territory. Landscape introduces for Zandvliet the possibility to use looser forms, more open and more varied. It is an old subject with a long tradition, especially in the artist's native Holland and Zandvliet situates himsel in the tradition of his predecessors, expanding the concept to a contemporary and free painterly act.
Zandvliet's work is expressive in gensture and processual in character. The artist is bold in his use of color; his brushstrokes are highly charged. The result transcends the idea of the landscape.
The book The Varick Series, published by Peter Blum Edition, New York, will be launched on the occasion of this exhibition. It illustrates the monotypes project which consists of approximately 50 images altogether, illustrated in full color. The book includes a foreword by the publisher, Peter Blum, as well as an essay by Vincent Katz, as well as poems by Elaine Equi and Vincent Katz in response to The Varick Series.
Robert Zandvliet has been exhibiting in Europe since 1994. His work was featured in group shows held at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam between 1996 and 1998. His one-person shows include his 1997 exhibition at the prestigious De Pont Foundation for Contemporary Art in Tilburg, Netherlands. Currently, a survey of Zandvliet's paintings is being held at the Musées de Strasbourg, France. Zandvliet will have a one person exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam in 2002.
