Tapestry and textile art enjoy a pronounced moment across the fair. Highlights include Otobong Nkanga’s epic intergalactic woven work at Lisson Gallery; Grayson Perry’s rainbow-infused narrative tapestry The Story of My Life at Victoria Miro; Claudia Wieser at Galeria Casado Santapau; Antonio Ballester Moreno at Pedro Cera; and Nicholas Galanin’s striking American Prayer Rug at Peter Blum.
Nicholas Galanin’s work is worth closer inspection in a dual display at Peter Blum alongside works by Rebecca Ward. Galanin and Ward both work with various medium and motifs often associated with “craft”, elevating decorative motifs or using traditional techniques such as carving, dyeing or sowing as social commentary. Galanin’s practice is rooted in his experience as a Lingít and Unangax artist and investigates the complexities of contemporary indigenous identity with artworks such as hand cut baskets, totems and deer hide.
