DAVID RABINOWITCH
Construction of Vision Drawings
September 23rd through November 18th, 2000
Peter Blum is pleased to announce the exhibition, DAVID RABINOWITCH: Construction of Vision Drawings, opening on Saturday, September 23rd, at 99 Wooster Street. This is Rabinowitch's fourth show at Peter Blum.
'Construction of Vision'-and not construction forms-is the title that David Rabinowitch chose for certain groups of individual drawings begun in 1969. In a broader sense, it could describe his entire body of work. An idea basic to the drawings is the separation of distinct visual elemtns and classes of elements; these do not literally 'combine' in the work but rather in the 'constructive' acts of relating, comparing and uniting objects of vision.
The drawings, executed between 1969 and 1976, translate the formal and perceptual concerns of his massive, planar steel sculptures into elegan yet powerful ink and graphite works on paper. Although he deals in these drawings with issues similar to those of his sculpture, at this time they are independent, fully self-contained works of art in their own right.
Rabinowtich was born in 1943 in Toronto, Canad. He is internationally known as a sculptor and represent in important museum colelctions worldwide. A current exhibition is on view at the Westfälische Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte in Münster, Germany. In the year 2001 he will major exhibitions at the Musée d'Art Contemporain in Montréal and at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.
